      This is from a 3-electrode coin cell program I set up a few years ago. 3E coins are great on paper, but very difficult to execute consistently in practice.
 
          
          
        
      On the left you can see an image of a completed 3E coin cell. The bullet points on the right list some of the strengths and weaknesses of using this configuration as a main test vehicle for your R&D program.
 
          
          
        
      I put together this image to describe the most common failure mode I was seeing in this configuration: soft-shorting of the reference electrode to the working electrode above.
